how can i tell if my dog will attack another dog?

Asked: how can i tell if my dog will attack another dog?

I have a Dalmatian who pulls on the leash like crazy. When ever she see's another dog she pulls and barks so much. When i get closer to the other dog i have alot of trouble trying to keep her away from it. Most of the time she plays with the dog (so im guessing she pulls cause she's excited) but there have been a couple times she's attacked the dog. Any body language signs i should look out for. HELP please, thanks.

Is this enough exercise for a German Shepherd?

Asked: Is this enough exercise for a German Shepherd?

I want to get a German Shepherd. have a smallish yard that is fenced in, however I can take the dog for a walk for about an hour before I go to work, and my boyfriend could walk him or her for another hour later in the day. Our dog would have access to the back yard throughout the day to eliminate, etc.

Is an hour walk, twice a day enough exercise? Probably once a week I'd be able to take him or her to my dad's who lives out in the country to play and exercise.

ps. Of course my dog will be living inside my house, I don't believe in chaining up a dog or leaving it outside all day.

Can I leave my puppy alove for 4 hours?

Asked: Can I leave my puppy alove for 4 hours?

I'm getting a GSD or a Golden Retriever, [or should I get both the Golden and the GSD to keep each other company?] and I will be leaving them alone for about 4 hours everyday, after they are 4 months old? Can I do this? Is there anything I need to do like leave the TV on?
I will walk/jog and play with the dogs and tire them before I leave.

what to do about our gsd?

Asked: what to do about our gsd?

we have a 1.5 yr old female GSD who is wonderful except for when she is in heat then she tends to get aggressive. We also have a 11 yr old ( almost 12) male dachshund who is neautered.

Last time she was in heat, he got tore up pretty good and we have a $300 vet bill. Well they just got into it again, we stopped it and neither was hurt. The GSD got thrown outside. The dachshund is sitting with me, scared spitless as you can imagine.

last time this happend, i told my fiance', she did it again, i was taking her to a friend of our( to be put down), to the animal shelter, and i just gave him this option today, she becomes an outside dog.
He then told me, that is she goes, he goes, cause he loves this dog… He was pretty pissed so he just left for work, without a goodbye or nothing. It also scares me because i am 4 months pregnant, and if she does this with a dog she grew up since she was a puppy, what is she going to do with the baby ?

I want to get her fixed, but i'm kinda in between jobs right now and can't afford it till i get working full time again.

what do u suggest? And don't say, anything about not being able to afford to get her fixed, being prepared for a GSD, or anythign like that. i'm not in the mood to hear it.

Bringing home a 6 month old German Shepherd Dog. Need urgent help?

Asked: Bringing home a 6 month old German Shepherd Dog. Need urgent help?

So we met this "breeder" through Craigslist. I know this probably raises red flags for you already. We were on the lookout for a great GSD and stumbled upon his AD. Asking price for $3500 for a beautiful looking GSD. He is a rich guy that's for sure. We went to his house to meet the dogs and the kennel and everything is top notch. Heck he drives an exotic car so I am sure he is not a backyard breeder doing this just for the money. He talked very passionately about his dogs. With that said, my concerns are as follows:

    1) He didn't ask us many questions about me and my wife. Which is odd for a reputable breeder.
    2) His GSD looked amazing. And the father was right there. Very healthy, stoic, good looking and well mannered. But his pups are mostly "outside" kennel dogs. So I am not sure as to the quality of socialization they received. He claims that they have had a lot of family visitors.
    3) He says he has all the papers for the boy (but the GSD we are going for has not been registered yet with AKC). He says he will provide papers for OFA certifications and DNA of both the parents. And that he administered the shots all by himself except for rabies.
    4) He didn't explicitly state but his dogs are huge. Like this boy at 6 months old is already 90 lbs. Is that abnormal for the breed standard?
    5) He claims he had initially wanted the dogs for himself but can't keep up with their upkeep and wants them to go to a good home. He claims that the sire and dam of the boy are direct import fromGermany. Dogs he paid upwards of $10,000 for.

All in all I feel that he is legit and the dogs just look absolutely STUNNING. But at the same time I feel concerned as to why he didn't interview me and my wife extensively just like any other good breeder would? Also, why didn't he tell us about his "return" policy of giving back the pup to him in case things didn't work out. Idk maybe I am reading too much into it but it seemed like he was pushing me to make it work no matter what happened and that return was not an option. Lastly he claims that the dog will grow to 115 lbs on full maturity. Is that abnormal? I don't know why my instincts are giving me some major cold feet before getting our dog. I loved the dog…but something just doesn't feel OK to me. Even though he is NOT in it for the money and doesn't seem like a backyard breeder. Could it just be that his hillbilly communication skills are just throwing me off and because of my cold feet I am reading too much into everything? Like he didn't ask us about our preperation to bring the dog home or hasn't spoken of any "new owner" kit or set of documents that good breeders provide. Stuff that gives you relevant information. Or maybe he thought that I already have done a lot of research so he didn't bother asking me those questions?

Sorry for the long question. PLEASE HELP….me understand if I should go ahead with it or if there are other questions I could ask him or things I should lookout for.

    Thank you
